What does the Bible say about man’s relationship with God?
Man’s Sinful State
At birth all of mankind is by nature and by choice a sinner and therefore an enemy of God… (Romans 5:12-21)
Man is born under God’s wrath and is condemned to an eternal death in a literal hell, separated from the blessings of God and His presence… (Romans 3:23; 6:23; Revelation 20:14-15)
Because sin is a part of man’s nature there is nothing he can do in his own power or ability to rid his own self of it and in turn make peace with God… (Romans 1:18-32; 3:10-18; Isaiah 64:6)
Because sin is a part of man’s nature there is nothing he can do in his own power or ability to attain a level of worthiness that would bring about peace with God…
But God…
Out of His mercy and kindness God initiated and completed all that was necessary for mankind to be at peace with Him… (Titus 3:5-7; 2 Corinthians 5:18, 21)
Out of His mercy and kindness God provided the one and only sufficient provision for man’s sin, that provision is the sacrificial death of His Son Jesus… (1 Peter 1:18-21; 1 Peter 2:22-24)
Jesus’ death on the cross was a substitute death in man’s place to satisfy the required consequence of man’s sin… (1 Peter 3:8; 1 John 2:1-2)
Jesus’ death that satisfied the required consequence of man’s sin allows forgiveness of sin and therefore provides for peace with God… (Ephesians 1:7; Romans 3:24-26)
Jesus’ payment for sin is offered to all men and all men respond by receiving it on their behalf or by rejecting it altogether (there is no middle ground)… (John 3:18-19)
Man’s Accountability
Every man will one day give an account regarding his response toward God’s provision for redemption through Jesus Christ (Romans 14:11-12).
Receiving Jesus’ payment for sin is an act of faith, believing Jesus to be God in flesh and believing His sacrifice to be sufficient and satisfactory for sin’s payment with nothing added on man’s part… (Ephesians 2:8-10)
